Abstract
1301477 Hydrogenation of unsaturated gasolines BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 4 Sept 1970 [23 Sept 1969] 46779/69 Heading C5E Hydrocarbon fractions boiling in the range 15-225 C. and containing aromatics, monoolefins, 4-35 wt. per cent of di-olefins and 0À01-1À5 wt. per cent of sulphur of which 10-300 p.p.m. by weight is mercaptan sulphur are passed, together with 200-5,000 SCF/B of hydrogen, over a supported nickel catalyst of which a major proportion of the nickel is present as the metal at a temperature of 50- 250 C., a pressure of 200-3000 p.s.i.g. and a space velocity of 0À2-10 v./v./hr. to produce a product having a reduced di-olefin content (excluding dicyclopentadiene) of below 0À5 wt. per cent and a reduced mercaptan sulphur content of below 30 p.p.m. Suitable feeds are gasolines produced from naphtha by catalytic or thermal cracking at below 593 C. or by thermal cracking at 593-900 C. using diluent steam and/or an inert heat transfer agent such as sand. The feed can contain 2,4-dimethyl-6- tert-butyl phenol as an inhibitor and normally contains 0À3-1À0% of thiophene sulphur. The catalyst contains 1-50 wt. per cent of nickel and is supported on a refractory compound of a metal of Group II, III or IV, e.g. chalk, alumina, sepiolite which can contain 0À1-5 wt. per cent of alkali or alkaline earth metal, silica gel or kieselguhr. The catalyst suitably has a sulphur to nickel atomic ratio between 0À01 and 0À4 when in use and can be presulphided before use, e.g. with a thiophene, thiacycloalkane or a dialkyl mono sulphide.
