Abstract
1300677 Valves ITE IMPERIAL CORP 26 April 1971 11453/71 Heading F2V A valve for controlling a fluid-actuated device M, Fig. 1, comprises a spool 14 for controlling flow from a bore 30 into either one of bores 32 and 34 and out of either one of exhaust ports 36 and 38 depending upon whether the spool is displaced to the left or to the right, the spool being maintained in its displaced position by part of the fluid flowing through bores 40, 42, 50, and into contact with one of the end faces 54 of the spool, the excess fluid permanently escaping to atmosphere through bores 60, 68 and 82, a throttle 46 controls the biasing effect. To move the spool from right to left a piston 84 on the right is moved manually, mechanically, electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically to close the bore 68, whereupon fluid passes through a restriction 62 to act on the right end face 54 of the spool. As the spool is displaced, additional fluid acts on the end face 54 when bore 52 is uncovered. Alternatively, the spool can be displaced by closing the bore 60 with the left piston 84, whereupon the back pressure acts on the right end face 54 of the spool. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) a diaphragm (104) is used to control the fluid acting on the end faces of the spool. In a modification, Fig. 8, the fluid acting to displace the spool may be supplied from a source 114 separate from that operating the device M. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the bores 60 and 68 are connected to pipes (126) and (128) which cooperate with stops (130) and (132) to control the fluid acting on the spool end faces. The valve may move relative to the stops or vice versa to achieve this. In a similar valve, to facilitate movement of the spool, each end face may be acted upon by a piston 204, Fig. 10, which is initially acted upon by fluid flowing through bores 68 and then additionally by fluid passing through bores 218 when uncovered by displacement of the spool.
