Abstract
1300125 Safety shower J D HUGHES FABRICATIONS Ltd 29 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970] 46651/70 Heading A4N [Also in Division A5] A shower for use as an outdoor safety shower e.g. for utilization at chemical plants for workers splashed with corrosive materials, comprises a water outlet 10 arranged to spray water downwardly, a second water outlet 12 mounted beneath said first water outlet and arranged to spray water substantially horizontally, and heating means 40 for heating the water supplied to the two outlets. The shower further comprises an eye-bath assembly 14 supported by an upright member 16 having a base-plate 18 which may be secured to the ground. The member 16 comprises an inner tube 20 preferably formed of mild steel, and an outer jacket 22 which may be formed of a thermoplastic material or of a metal. Between the tube 20 and jacket 22 is a layer 24 of heatinsulating material e.g. an isocyanate foam. Tubes 28, 30 and 32, 34 lead from member 16 to conduct water to water outlet 10 and eye-bath 14 respectively. Electrical resistance heating tapes 40 are wrapped around the tubes 20, 28, 30, 32, 34 and are connected to a junction box 43. An external electrical power supply may be connected to a further junction box 42 from which an indicator light 82 may be supplied. A thermostat 44 mounted in the end of the tube 28, monitors the temperature of the water. Valves 46, 48, 50 are used to control the water flow from the outlets 12, 10 and the eye-bath assembly 14 respectively, the valves 46, 48 being linked for simultaneous operation by a rod 52 pivotally connected to actuating levers 54, 56. A hand control 58 is formed in the rod 52, and an extension 60 of the rod 52 pivotally connected to a platform 62 hinged to the base 18. Thus, the shower may be operated by displacement of the hand control 58 or the platform 62. The extension 60 may be replaced by a flexible link in order to permit hand operation of the shower should the platform become jammed. The valve 50 of the eye-bath is able to be actuated separately to necessitate independent use of the eye-bath assembly, and a filter 76 is provided to remove dirt from the water. In order to ensure adequate drenching of the subject to remove all traces of corrosive materials the water outlets 10, 12 produce angles of spray of 60 degrees and 120 degrees respectively. The water outlets 10, 12 are embedded in insulation 36 in order to prevent freezing of the water.
