Abstract
1299826 Sterile packaging MOORE-PERK CORP 2 June 1971 18666/71 Heading B8C An article is packaged in a flexible container containing a predetermined amount of a liquid sterilizing agent, the walls of the container are flexed so that the entire interior surface of the container and the exposed surface of the article are washed with the sterilizing agent, and the package is heated so as to sterilize the article and the container. The article may be a surgical sponge, a suture, a catheter, or a hypodermic needle. The sterilizing agent may be a solution of hexachlorophene, iodophor, parachlorometahexanol, sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate, or benzalkonium chloride. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1-6) a sponge is placed in a bag containing the sterilizing agent, the sides of the bags are pressed together to compress the sponge, the bag-top is heat sealed, and further compression placed on the bag. The bag may be a rubber-modified linear polythene/Mylar laminate. In a second embodiment a sponge is soaked with the sterilizing agent and then placed on a sheet of a rubber-modified polythene/Mylar laminate which is folded and sealed into a tube about the sponge. The tubed sponge is then compressed and the tube-ends are heat sealed.
