Abstract

1298304 Detecting faults in containers OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 14 May 1971 [7 Dec 1970] 14912/71 Heading G1A In an apparatus for detecting "bird swing" or similar faults 82 in containers 14 travelling on a conveyer belt 10, each container 14 is vertically scanned by a light beam formed from an incandescent light source 28 rotary mirror 22 and slit aperture 68. Bird swing fault present in the container will reflect or refract the light beam into elongated detection units 60 or (62). The output signal of the detection units is fed into a gating system relay Fig.6 (not shown) with the signals from a pair of photo-cells (42), (44) arranged opposite a pair of light sources (48), (50). The gating system relay eliminates false signals due to the leading or trailing edges of the container 14 and only activates a solenoid valve 54, controlling a compressed air supply, when a bottle is present and a fault is detected. The detection units 60, (62) consist of a body plate (88), Fig.5 (not shown) provided with an elongated channel (90) which communicates with an angled elongated slot 84 or 86. A photosensitive device 92 is positioned in the channel to receive any light passing through the angled slot 84 or 86.
