1297582 Non-woven fabrics METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 21 Sept 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 44921/70 Heading D1R A non-woven web is formed of a plurality of side-by-side lengthwise sections each formed from a continuous bundle of at least 15 continuous melt spun synthetic thermoplastic organic polymeric filaments distributed in the form of smaller sub-bundles of substantially parallel filaments in a loop-like arrangement extending back and forth across the width of the section, the arrangement of filaments comprising multiple overlapping secondary smaller loops and swirls, at least 5 times as much of the filament length being laid down as said secondary loops as would be required to make a comparable web only from primary loops of said bundles, the adjacent individual sections overlapping each other without stratification by at least 50% of their width, with the loops and secondary loops randomly and substantially completely intermingled with those of the overlapping portion of the adjacent section. The unit weight of the web at the overlapping portions of the sections is not more than 20% different from the overall unit weight, the individual filaments are of 1-20 denier with a tenacity of 0.5-6 gpd and the web has a weight of 10-1500 g/m<SP>2</SP>. The fibres may be of linear polyethylene, isotactic polypropylene, polyisobutylene, polybutadiene polyurethane, polyvinyls, nylon 6 or 6, 6, polyethylene terephthalate, a copolymer of ethylene glycol with terephthalic and isoterephthalic acid, or of mixed polymers, or condensation or graft copolymers thereof. Webs of nylon-6, polypropylene and polyester are exemplified, which may be consolidated between heated pressure-rollers, or by needling and/or by latex bonding. The web is made by spinning filaments and gathering them into a straight row of untwisted bundles which are drawn down at a velocity of at least 2000 m/min in individual supersonic gas columns and projected onto a moving support, travelling perpendicular to the row of filaments. The gas may be air, supplied from a row of nozzles, which may be pivotally mounted for oscillation transverse to, or including an angle between 0-45‹ the direction of support movement.
