Abstract
129,667. Annable, H. W .C., and Nickel Concentration, Ltd. Nov. 19, 1917. Nickel and copper sulphates.-Nickel matte or sulphide or oxide nickel ore is heated with a chloride such as sodium chloride and, if there is a deficiency of sulphur, with a sulphiding-agent such as iron pyrites. The heating is effected in a neutral or non-oxidizing atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or steam, the temperature employed being 800-1000‹ C. The material is then oxidized in air at a temperature sufficient to decompose copper and iron sulphates but not nickel sulphate, and is finally treated with cold water, which dissolves the nickel sulphate. If copper is present in the residue, it is extracted by leaching with sulphuric acid.
