Abstract

129,626. Ford & Son, H., (Assignees of Ford, H.). July 10, 1918, [Convention date]. Axle structures.-The rear-axle housings 14 are bolted at 12 to a forwardly-extending casing 2 which encloses the change-speed gear, the driving worm 4 and the differential-gear. When one of the axle-housings has been detached, the axles and differential gear can be removed bodily, after which the worm-shaft 5 can then be withdrawn rearwardly through a cover-plate provided for the purpose. A draw-bar to which implements may be attached forms part of this cover-plate. The housing 23 of the differential-gear is in two parts carried in bearings 21 and having interior spherical surfaces which receive the side thrust of the sun pinions 24 of the gear. The sun pinions slide on to the axles and are secured in place by split locking-rings 26. The planet-carrier has four arms 27, the outer ends of which are carried in recesses in the gear-housing 23. The two parts of the gear-housing are bolted together at 33, the worm-wheel 32 being also secured by these bolts.
