Abstract
1296158 Semi-conductor devices WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE ENGLISH ELECTRIC SEMI-CONDUCTORS Ltd 22 July 1971 [6 Oct 1970] 47431/70 Heading H1K A contact, which is held against a semi-conductor device by resilient means, comprises a mass 9 provided with a planar face 12 and a peripheral face 24, the face 24 being coated with a brazing alloy, and to which face is welded a flange 22 of a cap 13, the cap being of an electrically conductive material which is deformable under the resilient means to accommodate disconformities in the face 12 and that of the semi-conductor element against which it is pressed. The cap 13 may be of silver, copper, gold or nickel, and may be spot welded at points 23 to the face 24. The alloy may be a copper/ silver eutectic and may be applied to faces 12 and 24 of the mass 9. The mass may be of tungsten/silver, and may be treated by etching to remove the tungsten from the faces, hence forming a silver "sponge" prior to coating with the alloy. Alternatively the mass may be of molybdenum, which is nickel plated and sintered, and further nickel or gold plated prior to alloy coating. The face 12 may not be coated or have the coating removed therefrom in order that the cap 13 and face 12 may move relatively to allow for differential thermal expansion therebetween. The contact shown may be suitable for a diode. A contact for a thyristor including an axial bore to insulating accommodate a contact to the gate region is also disclosed.
