Abstract
1295434 Mixed oxides UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 Nov 1969 [25 Nov 1968] 55908/68 Heading C1A Mixed oxides are made by mixing an aqueous silica or metal compound sol with either an aqueous sol of a second metal compound or an aqueous solution containing cations of the second metal, and spraying the mixture as droplets into a vessel containing gas at such elevated temperature that reaction to form a partly or fully-reacted mixed oxide occurs, and then separating out a powder of such mixed oxide. Mixed oxide is defined as a single phase mixed oxide compound or solid solution containing two or more metal cations or silicon and at least one metal cation, but excluding more physical admixtures. An aqueous solor solution of a third metal may be incorporated in the starting mixture. The droplets (e.g. 10 microns) may be sprayed countercurrent to, or cocurrent with, a flow of gas e.g. air, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen or ammonia heated to 700- 1000‹C. directly or by radiation from the walls of the reaction vessel. Reaction takes place in gaseous suspension to form a hydrous oxide gel, which is then dehydrated to a ceramic gel e.g. 1-5 microns diameter. The particles may be powdered, shaped into green artifacts and sintered, or alternatively reduced to a metal alloy powder, The reaction vessel may be a vertical heated silica or alumina tube. Examples describe the preparations of (1) lead zirconatetitanate from titanium hydroxide sol, zirconium hydroxide sol and lead nitrate solution; (2) CaMgSiO 4 and Ca 3 MgSi 2 O 8 from calcium nitrate solution, magnesium nitrate solution and silica aquasol; (3) calcium magnesium silicate; and (4) tungsten-cobalt alloy (including hexagonal WCo 3 ) by reducing, in hydrogen at 1000‹C, a mixed oxide made from cobalt nitrate solution and tungstic oxide aquasol.
