Abstract

1295293 Making metal foam laminates DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 15 April 1970 [19 April 1969] 20085/69 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions B5 C7 D1 and E1] A composite structure comprises a rigid porous foam consisting substantially of metal and surfaced with a bonded fibrous layer. The fibres may be carbon, graphite, boron, silica, steel or glass, and the bonding material may be ceramic, metal, e.g. brass, phosphor bronze, aluminium, or resin, e.g. epoxy resin, polyester, polyamide. The foam may be produced by spraying, dipping or electrodepositing metal, e.g Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe and alloys, on to a polyurethane foam, which may be reticulated. The foam substrate may be removed by heating. The composite may be prepared by applying a resin impregnated woven, non-woven or random fibrous sheet to the metallic layer, and curing under pressure. Alternatively, filaments may be wound on to the substrate. Bonding may be facilitated by extra resin (for resin binders) or by soldering or welding (for metallic binders). In an example, a nickel foam is bonded at each face to two sheets of epoxy-reinforced parallel carbon fibres having the fibre axes at 90 degrees.
