Abstract

1294645 Making non-aqueous polymer dispersions CELANESE COATINGS CO 6 May 1970 [4 June 1969] 21762/70 Heading C3P Non-aqueous dispersion of polymers of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers are produced by a process in which the monomer or monomers are polymerized whilst dispersed in an inert liquid hydrocarbon medium boiling at from 100‹ to 500‹ F. and capable of dissolving not more than 10% by weight of the polymer being formed, in the presence of a tertiary alkyl peroctoate as initiator, and a polymeric stabilizer soluble in said medium, in an amount of 1-3% by wt. based on the combined weight of said polymer and stabilizer, the stabilizer being a homopolymer of an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alcohol of 8 to 18 carbon atoms, or a copolymer thereof with one or more other monomers, which has a Gardner- Holdt viscosity at 25‹ C. and 50% solids in V, M, and P naphtha, of at least C. Tertiary butyl peroctoate is the preferred initiator, and a chain transfer agent may also be present. In the examples polymers of methyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate/styrene, methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid, and methyl methacrylate/hydroxy ethyl methacrylate are prepared in hydrocarbon dispersion form, using stabilizers of polylauryl methacrylate, and polylauryl methacrylatÚ - co - butyl methacrylate, of varying Gardner-Holdt viscosities.
