Abstract
1294465 Induction motors HERBERT MORRIS Ltd 4 Nov 1970 [4 Nov 1969] 53962/69 Heading H2A A planar air gap induction motor has an electromagnetically operated brake associated with the rotor. Fig. 2 shows one embodiment wherein a cast iron or steel rotor disc 6 with an annular ring of low resistance material, such as aluminium or copper, co-operating with fixed stator coils (not shown), is fixed to a shaft 5 journalled in a casing 3 which carries a disc 12 with a brake lining 14 urged by springs 13 into engagement with the rotor disc. Electromagnets (not shown) for releasing the brake are provided. More than one discoidal rotor and more than one set of stator coils may be provided to increase the output of the motor. In an alternative braking arrangement, Fig. 5, spring-loaded brake shoes 17 released by a solenoid 18 co-operate with a drum 15 on the hub of the rotor disc, and according to a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the rotor disc is axially displaceable on shaft 5, being withdrawn from engagement with fixed brake pads (14) against a spring (19) on energization of the stator coils.
