Abstract
1294013 Rolling mills; forging UNITED ENG & FOUNDRY CO 10 April 1970 [17 April 1969] 17132/70 Headings B3H and B3M Apparatus for reducing the width of a workpiece such as a slab by opposed rolls or rams includes means for constraining the slab to minimize local increases in thickness during the width reduction. The apparatus may be associated with a continuous casting plant and incorporates, in one form (Fig. 1) rolls 23 and 24 engaging opposite edges of a slab. Each roll is driven by a vertical shaft 32 (Fig. 3) and is mounted in a chock 31 which can be laterally adjusted by a screw 25. The roll itself is formed in two sections 38 and 39 each of which has a flat face 42a or 43a for constraining the slab. The sections are adjustable relative to one another to vary the spacing between these faces, in order to accommodate slabs of different thickness. The spacing is adjusted by a pair of pinions 44 which relatively rotate the sections, both the pinions and their driving motors being carried by the section 39. In place of the rolls 23 and 24, opposed squeezer rams 64 and 65 (Fig. 4) may be employed, each ram being laterally adjustable by a screw 62 and being operated by a pistoncylinder assembly 57. Vertically adjustable platens 71 and 72 constrain the slab against local increases in thickness. The lower platens serve also to adjust the height of the slab so as to align it with the rams. Several upper and lower platens are arranged in tandem and are adjusted by bell crank levers using common piston-cylinder assemblies.
