Abstract
1293979 Continuous casting INLAND STEEL CO 11 Aug 1970 [2 Feb 1970 6 July 1970] 38732/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A slag, used as a liquid layer and to reduce friction in continuous steel casting, contains in weight per cent 10-55 SiO 2 , 0-40 CaO, 5-40 CaF 2 , 5-30 Na 2 O and/or K 2 O, 0À5-15 Li 2 O and/or LiF, 0-30 B 2 O 3 , with B 2 O 3 + CaF 2 + LiF > 15. The slag has a fluidity of 2-16 inches, a plastic deformation point between 1100‹ and 1700‹ F. and an Al 2 O 3 solubility >20% weight. The standard tests for determining these properties are disclosed. The slag is made by fusing a mixture of the components and grinding the cooled slag to -20 mesh with preferably 50% -100 mesh. The enriched slag may be mixed with 1-10% graphite, lamp black, coke or charcoal. The raw materials used for the slag may be sodium silicate, window glass, fluorspar, metal carbonates, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 and borax. Part of the CaO may be substituted by BaO, MgO or SrO. Oxides of Ni, Co, Pb, Cu, Mo, W, P are only included in the slag if they are required in the steel casting. The crushed slag is added to the surface of the metal in the continuous casting mould to form a molten slag layer ¢-2 inches thick.
