Abstract

1293414 Polymerization of α-olefins AGENCY OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY and KANEGAFUCHI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 29 Sept 1970 46159/70 Heading C3P Polymerization of α-olefins is carried out in the presence of hydrogen or hydrogen and ethylene using a catalyst comprising (a) R 3 Al 2 X 3 or RAlX 2 where R is a hydrocarbon radical preferably having 1 to 12 carbon atoms and X is Cl, Br or I, (b) R<SP>1</SP>P(OR<SP>11</SP>) 2 or R<SP>1</SP> 2 P(OR<SP>11</SP>) where each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> is a hydrocarbon radical, optionally halogen-substituted, having 1 to 12 carbon atoms and (c) a mixedcrystal halide consisting of titanium trichloride and aluminium trichloride. Preferably components (a) and (b) are mixed first and then combined with component (c). Polymers are obtained having controlled molecular weights and high isotacticity. The examples describe the polymerization in a hydrocarbon solvent or in bulk of propylene or 1-butylene in the presence of hydrogen, Et 3 Al 2 Cl 3 or EtAlCl 2 , 3TiCl 3 .AlCl 3 , and various compounds of each of the formulµ (b). Polymerization of propylene in the presence of hydrogen and ethylene, leading to a copolymer, is also exemplified.
