1293062 Knitting machines J P STEVENS & CO Inc 12 June 1970 [16 June 1969] 28518/70 Heading D1C A yarn or the like is threaded alternately round uniformly spaced pulleys 8L, 8R on the outer loops of two endless diverging chains 5L, 5R so as to form a zig-zag configuration of yarn which is forwarded and gradually extended until the yarn between. two pulleys is lifted as a weft by non-rotatable means 33 and inserted, e.g. in a warp-kniting machine. Insert yarn from cones 1 passes through an eye 4 in an oscillating arm 3 which moves in synchronism with the knitting machine being driven from the main shaft. Arm 4 inserts the yarn round pulleys 8L, 8R on left hand and right hand endless chains 5L, 5R carried on sprockets 6L, 7L and 6R, 7R. Mounted with each pulley 9 is a top 10 with a point and a tab 33 which lifts the thread out of the pulley as it moves round the lower sprocket. To prevent the insert yarn from snarling up at the start and finish, brakes 12L, 12R are provided comprising bars with soft rubber surfaces to engage the pulleys actuated by solenoids interlocked with the start and stop switches of the machine. With a strong insert yarn, the brakes may be applied continuously. The warp threads 26 for knitting are supplied by guides to needles 18 from beams 27. As a pulley reaches a lower sprocket the yarn lifted by tab 33 is engaged by a hook 16L or 16R and the tension is reduced as it is knitted into the fabric. This arrangement inserts a weft in every other course whereas if hooks 16L, 16R are not used the inserts are placed in every course.
