Abstract

1292454 Azoxanol dyestuffs IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Aug 1970 [23 Sept 1969] 46826/69 Heading C4P [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] The invention comprises salts formed from inorganic and organic bases and the azoxanol dyestuffs which in one tautomeric form are represented by the formula wherein Z<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>2</SP> are H or optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radicals, X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, X<SP>3</SP> and X<SP>4</SP> are H, CN, COR<SP>1</SP>, COOR<SP>1</SP> or CONR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> or an optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radicals and R<SP>2</SP> may also be H, and K<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> may join with the N atom to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic radical. They are prepared by condensing a nitroso compound of the formula with a hydroxypyridone of the formula. wherein X<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>4</SP>, Z<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>2</SP> are as defined above in presence of an inorganic or organic base. The dyestuffs obtained may be used to dye wool, silk, polyamides, polyesters, cellulose acetate and polyacrylonitrile and may also be used in photographic processes where they are decolorized by sulphite.
