Abstract
1292058 Apparatus for skinning onions LES PARSONS & SONS (ENGS) Ltd 26 Oct 1970 [5 Nov 1969 6 March 1970] 54150/69 and 10772/70 Heading A4C [Also in Division B8] An onion skinning machine comprises a rotating wheel 61 containing open chambers into which onions are dropped one per chamber and subjected to a blast of fluid, such as air, whereby the onions move freely in the blast and are thereby skinned, a hopper 10, an endless conveyer 19, (18) Fig. 3 (not shown), having onion carrying devices and means for removing excess onions from the conveyer so that only one onion is in each carrying device at a discharge position at which the onions are passed by means of guides 105, 106, 108, and preferably an air blast device 107, into said open chambers, and a motor 112 and drive transmission which drives the wheel 61 and conveyer in co-ordination. Each carrying device consists of two V-shaped members 20, one of which is mounted on an endless chain (18) and the other on endless chain 19. Onions in hopper 10 are fed to members 20 by means of a reciprocated zig-zag bar 73 and two spaced eccentrically mounted counter-rotating rollers 63, (64), Fig.2 (not shown). Excess onions are removed from the conveyer by a static knock-off blade 76 between chains (18), 19 and by a member 77 having two or more blades rotated so that the blades pass through the spaces between the carrying devices. The peripheries of the onions may be slit by knives 90, 91 which are resiliently urged towards each other, a member 100 engaging the front of each onion as the lower rear part is slit. A rotating star wheel 104 knocks the onions off the conveyer to pass to wheel 61 from which skinned onions are transferred to a helical conveyer 110 and waste falls to a conveyer 111. The wheel 61 and fluid blast arrangement therefor may be of the type described in Specification 1096377. The machine is stated to be for skinning onions rejected following treatment on a machine of the type described in said Specification but may be used for skinning untreated onions if topping and tailing knives are added in the manner disclosed in said Specification.
