Abstract

1291136 Band brakes; cooling brakes; brake drums BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 19 April 1971 [23 Jan 1970 27 Oct 1970] 3511/70 and 51045/70 Heading F2E [Also in Divisions C6-C7] A band brake comprises a rotatable brake drum 1 having a friction lining 2 and a copper alloy brake band 3 arranged to be tightened around the drum 1 to produce a braking torque, the band 3 engaging the lining 2 by its inner surface and having a cooling water duct 9 along its outer surface. The duct 9 is formed by a channel shape neoprene moulding 10 clamped to the outer surface of the band 3 by strips 11 which are welded to the band 3; pipe adapters 12 are bonded to the ends of the moulding 10 to which are connected nylon tubes 13 for leading water to the duct 9 and tubes 14 for leading water from the duct 9, the water being supplied by a low pressure high rate pump. The ends of the band 3 are connected to a bifurcated lever 4 keyed to a shaft 5 and the band 3 is tightened by an hydraulic actuator 8 which is operable to load a lever 7 also keyed to the shaft 5. The shaft 5 is mounted in a frame 6. The alloy of the band 3 preferably comprises more. than 94% copper and examples of such alloys given are: (1) 0À2-2À5% beryllium, 0À2-3% cobalt and the remainder copper and usual impurities. (2) 0À5-3% chromium and remainder copper and usual impurities. The Specification includes a mathematical discussion as to how to determine the band thickness and band width most suitable for particular operational characteristics of the brake. The band brake may be used in high speed railway vehicles and also in colliery winding gear and oceanic cable laying gear.
