Abstract
1290943 5-(3-Cyanopropyl)-hydantoin preparation STAMICARBON NV 23 Feb 1970 [6 March 1969] 8593/70 Heading C2C 5-(3-Cyanopropyl)-hydantoin is prepared by reacting in the liquid phase 4-cyanobutyraldehyde with a cyanide reactant, a carbon dioxide reactant and an ammonium reactant, the number mols of ammonium reactant present during the reaction being at least 2 more than twice the number mols carbon dioxide reactant present and at least 2 mols of ammonium reactant being used in the form of ammonia and/or ammonium hydroxide. It is preferred to effect the reaction in an aqueous medium at 30 to 90 C. using a number mols ammonium reactant 4-15 higher than twice the number mols CO 2 reactant, 4-15 mols of ammonia and/or ammonium hydroxide being employed. The cyanide reactant may be HCN or a salt, e.g. NaCN, KCN or NH 4 CN. The ammonium reactant may be a salt, e.g. NH 4 Cl, NH 4 CN, in addition to NH3 and/or NH 4 OH. The carbon dioxide reactant may be the free gas or a carbonate, bicarbonate or carbamate, e.g. (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 ; thus two reactants may be provided by one salt.
