1290693 Imidazole derivatives KRKA TOVARNA ZDRAVIL 31 Oct 1969 [1 Nov 1968] 53521/69 Heading C2C Novel imidazole derivatives of the general formula wherein R 1 is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl, haloalkoxy-C 1-4 alkyl or hydroxy-C 1-4 alkyl group, R 2 is a C 1-4 alkyl group, and one of R 3 and R 4 is a halogen atom when the other is an amino, cyano, C 1-4 alkoxy, C 1-4 alkylamino, C 1-4 hydroxyalkylamino or piperidino group, a group of the general formula or a halogen atom; or one of R 3 and R 4 is a nitro group when the other is an amino, cyano, C 1-4 alkoxy, C 1-4 alkylamino, C 1-4 hydroxyalkylamino or piperidino group or a halogen atom; or one of R 3 and R 4 is the group of the above formula when the other is a cyano group, are prepared (a) when one of R 3 and R 4 is a nitro group and the other is an amino group, by reaction of a nitro-imidazole of the general formula with hydroxylamine or a salt thereof; (b) when one of R 3 and R 4 is a nitro group and the other is a C 1-4 alkoxy or cyano group, by reaction of a halonitroimidazole of the general formula wherein Hal is a halogen atom, with a metal compound of the general formula MeR 5 , wherein Me is an alkali metal and R 5 is a C 1-4 alkoxy or cyano group; (c) when one of R 3 and R 4 is a nitro group and the other is a piperidino group, by reaction of a halonitroimidazole of the fourth general formula above with piperidine; (d) when one of R 3 and R 4 is a group of the second general formula above and the other is a cyano group, by reaction of a nitroimidazole of the third general formula above with an alkali metal cyanide; (e) when one of R 3 and R 4 is a nitro group and the other is a C 1-4 alkylamino or C 1-4 hydroxyalkylamino group, by reaction of a halonitroimidazole of the fourth general formula above with an amine of the general formula H 2 NR 6 , wherein R 6 is a C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 hydroxyalkyl group; (f) when R 1 is a C 1-4 alkyl group, by N-alkylation of the corresponding imidazole derivative of the first general formula above wherein R 1 is a hydrogen atom; and (g) when R 3 and/or R 4 is a halogen atom, by halogenation of the corresponding imidazole derivative of the first general formula above wherein R 3 and/or R 4 is a hydrogen atom.
