Abstract
1290461 Spring units METEOR RESEARCH Ltd 17 March 1971 7092/71 Heading F2S A spring unit for counterbalancing car bonnets consists of two telescoping tubes 36, 42 urged apart by a compression spring(s) 48, 50, but limited in this outward movement by cooperating stops 54, 56 on the tubes. The stops are required to consist of at least one inwardly extending integral projection 54 on the outer tube 36 spaced from the inner end thereof, and the outwardly flared inner end 56 of the inner tube 42. The inner end of the outer tube 36.is of reduced diameter to form (Fig. 3, not shown) or retain a bearing for the inner tube 42. The tubes may be held in any position by releasing a helical torsion spring 66 housed in the annular space between the tubes into frictional engagement with the inner tube 42. One end 68 of the torsion spring is anchored to the outer tube 36, and the other 70 passes through a slot (72, Fig. 5, not shown) in the outer tube 36 and through an opening (74) in a sleeve 76 which surrounds the outer tube. Thus, rotation of the sleeve 76 in one direction unwinds the torsion spring 66 which releases its frictional grip on the inner tube and allows compression and extension of the unit. In Fig. 3 the inwardly extending integral projection on the outer tube is an annular shoulder.
