1290310 Gas-discharge display panels BURROUGHS CORP 1 Oct 1969 [2 Oct 1968] 14516/72 Divided out of 1289971 Heading H1D A cold cathode display device comprises an insulating plate 20 provided with gas-filled apertures extending therethrough, each aperture comprising a light-generating cell, phosphor material 390 within each cell, a plurality of closely associated ones of said cells being grouped in a cluster, each cell of the cluster having phosphor material in the cell for producing a colour different from other cells of the cluster, the cluster being arranged within the device in a two-dimensional array, two electrodes associated with each cell, said electrodes being at opposite ends of the cell in physical contact with the gas in the cell, and means for energizing selected ones of said gas cells to produce coloured light therein and generate an overall colour pattern on the display device, said means including a plurality of row conductors 120 providing first ones of said two electrodes along one side of said panel and a plurality of column conductors 80 providing second ones of said two electrodes along the opposite side of said panel for applying a predetermined electric field across selected ones of said cells. The panel is completed by top and bottom plates 72 and 74. The phosphor 390 may be deposited on the top surface of a cathode button or in the depression of a cup-shaped button. Alternative locations are on the wall of the cell or on the inner surface of top plate 72 in alignment with the cell. The clusters are preferably triads of red, green and blue-emitting phosphors (Fig. 3). A cell may contain two phosphor materials which may be stimulated simultaneously to produce a third colour as described in Specification 1,281,752. The gas filling may include A, Ne, Xe and Hg.
