1289502 Pipe couplings C E & J P BRITTON Ltd 30 June 1970 [8 May 1969] 23411/69 Heading F2S In a pipe coupling between a pipe 11 and another pipe or pipe fitting 10, a socket 12 has a cylindrical bore 13 and a counterbore 17 into which is screwed a retaining ring 19. The inner end of the ring 19 and an annular shoulder 18 define the walls of an annular groove 22 into which a sealing ring 23 may be fitted. The groove 22 is of sufficient axial length for the retaining ring 19 not to deform the ring 23 when a pipe 11 is not in the socket 12. Alternatively a second counterbore within the counterbore 17 may be provided between the bore 13 and the counterbore 17 and the retaining ring 19 is screwed into the latter until it abuts an annular shoulder formed between the second and the remainder of the counterbore 17. The sealing ring 23 is then placed in a groove whose walls are defined by the same end of the retaining ring 19 and another annular shoulder between the second counterbore and the bore 13. Alternatively the retaining ring 19 may have a lip extending radially outwards so that its screwed insertion into the counterbore 17 is limited by the lip abutting the end of the socket 12. Screw threads 20, 21 may be of unequal pitch so that an interference fit between the retaining ring 19 and the socket 12 is obtained.
