Abstract
1289396 Dialkyl thiophosphoryl chlorides HERCULES Inc 16 Dec 1970 [30 Jan 1970] 59810/70 Heading C2P Di-(C 1-8 alkyl) thiophosphoryl chlorides, in which the alkyl groups may be the same or different, are prepared by (I) mixing at - 10‹ to 10‹ C. one molar equivalent of a di-(C 1-8 alkyl) - dithiophosphoric acid with one molar equivalent of chlorine, and (2) when substantially all of the chlorine has reacted, raising the temperature of the reaction mixture to 75‹ to 110‹ C., and maintaining the mixture at that temperature until it is substantially free of sulphur monochloride. The reaction may be carried out in an inert, anhydrous, liquid reaction medium. Preferably the reaction mixture is maintained in the second temperature range until substantially all of the sulphur formed has been converted to a relatively more thermally stable form. The product may be isolated from the reaction mixture by distillation at 90-100‹ C. and at reduced pressure.
