Abstract

1289381 Vacuum cleaner nozzle ELECTROLUX Ltd 30 Jan 1970 [4 Feb 19691 4585/70 Heading A4F A vacuum cleaner, of the type in which working members can be brought alternately into contact with a surface being cleaned by a shifting device 15 sensitive to air-pressure in the implement, includes an operating device 24 which in normal automatic operation, opens or closes a valve 22, 23 between a suction channel of the implement 14 and the shifting device 15 according to the work surface being cleaned. A vacuum cleaning implement has a nozzle connected to vacuum by channel 14, a brush 16 connected to diaphragm 15 and movable through apertures 18 in response to movement of the diaphragm 15. On hard floors, Figs.1, 3 (not shown) push rod 24 is clear of the surface being cleaned, valve disc 22 is seated on seat 23 and the space above diaphragm 15 is isolated from the vacuum in the suction nozzle and connected to atmosphere by apertures 29 and 33. Springs 17, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) then push brushes 16 out through apertures 18. On soft (carpeted) floors, wheels 27 sink into the pile, push rod 24 and valve disc 22 are lifted and the space above diaphragm 15 is connected to vacuum via apertures 29, 30, 31, 32, and the diaphragm 15 and brushes 16 are lifted out of contact with the surface. Air leak aperture 33 could be omitted if the aperture about push rod 24 were enlarged. Valve seat 23 can be moved by manually adjusting knob 28 so that ultimately the brushes would always be retracted or extended.
