Abstract
1288932 Electric motor cooling core and mounting arrangements PEGSON Ltd 22 Jan 1970 [6 Feb 1969] 6384/69 Heading H2A [Also in Division F1] A submersible sewage pump comprises an electric motor 3 driving a shaft 2 which is mounted in bearings 5 only at its upper end and which carries an impeller 4 at its lower end, the motor being disposed within a casing 1 having the form of an air bell which in use is maintained full of air (or nitrogen) to prevent the liquid being pumped from reaching the motor. A baffle 14 between the motor and impeller prevents excessive loss of air owing to turbulence, but air that does escape is channelled away by a shield 16 around the casing to serve as a cooling air jacket around the casing when the pump is not fully submerged. Air is supplied continuously or intermittently via a pipe 13 to make up for any air lost. The stator windings 7 are encapsulated in a plastics material, and the core laminations may be of stainless steel, or may be varnished, encapsulated or shielded. A gap tube may be provided.
