Abstract

1287742 Slides IAN NICHOLS Ltd 26 Aug 1969 [7 June 1968] 27147/68 Heading B3B [Also in Division F1] A double acting hydraulic ram 1 for moving a cross slide 7 is secured to a fixed frame 9 and is supplied by a pump 9 delivering through reversible distributing valve 8 of the closed centre spool type and which is biased to an open position by a double acting compressed air motor 16 linked thereto by levers 10, 11 and the control valve 8 is subjected to a controlled opposing bias provided by the reaction force of a cylinder 21 mechanically connected to lever 10 when fluid is displaced therefrom through a needle valve 24 by means of a piston 22 connected by its rod 20 to the slide 7 and whereby a preselected ram speed is achieved by balancing the two biases. In operation compressed air is supplied through a pressure control valve 18 and reversing valve 19 to say the left hand side of motor 16 which thus moves control lever 11 anti-clockwise and displaces valve 8 and the connected cylinder 21 to the right thereby feeding hydraulic fluid to the right hand end of a cylinder 4 so as to extend slide 7 and connected piston 22. The reaction force provided by the back pressure set up by the partly open needle valve 24 and acting against the left hand end of cylinder 2 serves to partly close valve 8 to a position where the reaction force and the ram moves at a constant speed depending on the setting of valves 18, 24. If during the forward stroke the slide offers an increased resistance so that the ram speed falls, the reaction bias automatically decreases and the control valve 8 assumes a more open position resulting in the ram speed being restored.
