Abstract
1287510 Continuous casting machines CREUSOT-LOIRE 21 Dec 1970 [26 Dec 1969] 60669/70 Heading B3F A method of continuous casting metals in the form of a band or strip comprises injecting the molten metal between two cooled cylinders 1 and 2 rotating in the direction of injection of the metal, and maintaining the cast strip S against the periphery of one of the cylinders until it is completely solidified. The metal is introduced to the nip between the cylinders by a graphite nozzle 5 and is confined between lateral cheeks 8 pressed against the sides of cylinders 1 and 2 by springs 9. An electric heating resistance 12 is located within each cheek 8. The peripheral speed of the cylinders is selected so that the strip confined between the cylinders and the lateral cheeks has a still liquid core. After emerging from the nip between the cylinders the strip is further cooled by water sprays 24 and is removed from the cylinder 1 by a scraper 14. The cylinders may be cooled by an inner water circulation or by means of a refrigerating agent, e.g. a liquefied gas, used either as the inner cooling fluid or in the form of a bath in which the lower part of each cylinder is immersed, or it may be sprayed on to the periphery of the cylinders. The cylinders are cleaned by water sprays 26 and 28 and rotating brushes 27 and 29. In addition, the cylinder 2 has lubricant applied to it by a roller 30 to prevent adhesion of the strip thereto. In an embodiment, Fig. 5, gravity determines which cylinder supports the cast strip. Molten metal is supplied to the nozzle 5 through a passage 6 from a tundish (7) in which the level of molten metal is maintained at a point higher than that at which the nip of the cylinders is located, said level being measured by means of a photo-electric cell (31) which controls the movement of a tilting ladle (35). The rotational speed of the cylinders may be controlled in dependence upon the temperature of the cast strip immediately above the nip or in dependence upon the reaction of the strip on the cylinders. The latter may be determined by mounting the bearings of the shaft of cylinder 2 in slides retained in position by springs. After removal from the cylinder 1, the cast strip is passed through pulling and straightening rollers 15 and 16, a furnace 17, heating elements 19 and a rolling mill 21 and is trimmed by circular shears 22.
