Abstract

1287122 Invalid carriages W MEYER 25 Sept 1969 [1 Oct 1968] 47212/69 Headings B7D and B7H A foldable invalid carriage comprises frame parts 10, 11 hinged together, and a detachable propulsion unit 14 between the frame parts, the unit being coupled to axles 12 of driven wheels 13. A pair of undriven, smaller steered wheels are also provided. The propulsion unit may comprise an electric motor 19, a differential 16 and a drive shaft 15 having at each end a releasable coupling connecting the shaft to axles 12. The couplings each comprise a part 17 on the shaft co-operating and coaxial with a part 18 on the axle. The couplings are enclosed in housings 26 each comprised of two hinged parts 24, 25 securable together, the lower of which 24 is rigidly secured to a frame part 10, 11. Shaft 15 is enclosed in a hollow shaft 27 located by flanges 28 on housing part 24. The motor spindle has a rapid-action brake (Fig. 3, not shown) acting thereon and controlled by the motor control lever 35 of the carriage. The brake comprises a shoe (38) urged against the motor spindle (33), and controlled by cable. An extension of the motor casing is supported by a part of frame part 11.
