Paper pipes and tubes.-In a machine for winding paper &c. tubes, the material, previously coated with adhesive except at the portion forming the interior layer of the tube, is pressed against the mandrel 2 by endless tapes 6 passing over two pairs of rollers 4, 5 and by an auxiliary roller 30 over which the material is passed to the mandrel from a table 37. The rollers 4, 5 are adjustably mounted on arms 7 pivoted to bell-crank levers 8, and the roller 30 on a pivoted arm 31. The levers 8 have pivoted plates carrying adjustable screws 28 bearing against spring cushioning devices 29 on the levers. A similar arrangement is provided on the arm 31. The rollers 4, 5 are brought into yielding engagement with the mandrel by lifter bars 15 bearing against the pivoted plates on the arms 8 and operated from a treadle 23. The roller 30 is moved at the same time by a roller (not shown), carried by one of the levers 8 and operating the arm 31. Jointed and adjustable guides or fingers 38 are provided to aid in guiding the paper round the mandrel. The finished tube is cut into required lengths by cutters 40 mounted on pivoted arms 41 and moved into engagement with the tube by a handle (not shown), operating link connexions 45. An adjustable stop 47 is provided which comes into contact with the projecting end of a shaft 44 and prevents the cutters from being damaged by contact with the mandrel.
