Abstract

1286738 Substituted 1,3-phenylenediamine herbicides UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORP 20 Oct 1970 49849/7O Heading C2C A herbicidal composition comprises as active ingredient at least one substituted 1,3-phenylenediamine of the formula wherein X represents a halogen atom, each R 1 represents H, alkyl, or haloalkyl, and each R 2 represents (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl, halo-(C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl, (C 2 -C 6 ) alkenyl or halo-(C 2 -C 6 ) alkenyl, together with a carrier or diluent, and when the diluent is a solvent, a surface-active agent in addition. The active ingredient may be prepated either by nitrating an appropriate phenylenediamine followed by halogenation, or by reacting 1,2,4-trihalo-5-nitrobenzene with an excess of an alkylamine. Examples are given for the production of the active ingredients and for testing the activity of the compounds. The compositions may contain other active ingredients.
