Abstract
1285803 Pipe connectors HYDROTECH SERVICES Inc 20 Nov 1970 [24 Nov 1969] 55429/70 Heading F2G Two pipes which may be misaligned are each connected to a connector and the connectors joined together. As shown in Fig. 7 pipes 73, 74 can slide within connectors 71, 72 which are joined by clamp ring 84 over their flanges 81, 83. The pipes 73, 74 can slide and rotate within the connectors 71, 72 but when the required position is found they are fixed relative to each other. An alternative arrangement for joining similar connectors 34, 35 is shown in Fig. 4. In another arrangement the connectors each have a flange attached obliquely at one end of their length, one of the flanges, Fig. 5B (not shown), has a number of holes (25) at a given pitch and the other, Fig. 5A (not shown), has four slots at the same pitch and extending circumferentially. Bolts are placed through the holes (25) and the connectors slid over the pipes to be joined. The slots in the second flange permit the rotation of the connectors relative to the pipes and each other so that the axes of the connectors can be misaligned to the same extent as the pipes to be joined. The abutting flanges are then secured in that positioning by tightening nuts on the flange bolts. In Fig. 8 the connectors are joined by a ball-andsocket arrangement. Further modifications of this, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), employ connectors each having a socket identical to that shown fitted to connector 88 and the connectors are joined by two balls, identical to those shown, joined back to back. The balls may incorporate further adjustment by being joined back to back using oblique flanges of the type described above. The double ball-and-socket arrangement can join not only pipes whose longitudinal axes intersect but also those whose axes are parallel. In each of these arrangements the pipes are rigidly joined to the connectors by the arrangement shown in Fig. 8 in which there is a piston 93, seals 95, grips 97 (circumferentially spaced) and a fixed block 98. Fluid pressure is applied to the piston 93 via inlet 92 which causes grips 97 to engage the pipe 86 and the seals 95 to be subsequently compressed. The fluid used is preferably an epoxy resin which will harden and a permanent joint results.
