Abstract

1285579 Papermaking BELOIT CORP 14 Nov 1969 [3 Feb 1969] 55914/69 Heading D2A A twin-wire papermaking machine comprises a pair of looped forming wires each looped about a breast roll and a couch roll, and a stock headbox comprising nozzle walls, having stationary parts 27, 28 and movable parts 33, 34, forming a stock outlet for directing stock into the gap between the breast rolls, means for preventing exposure of the stock to the air between the nozzle and the gap comprising a liquid jacket adjacent the nozzle walls and having an open end facing the gap, and means for supplying liquid under pressure to this jacket to effect discharge of the liquid at a velocity less than the velocity of the stock. As shown, liquid jacket 40 has aprons 46, 47 which extend to below the narrowest part of the gap. Spacers 51 and 52 are attached to nozzle lips 33, 34 and conform, outwardly, to the shape of flexible aprons 46, 47, leaving channels, e.g. 53, for liquid. Liquid is supplied by low-pressure pump LP, and the liquid may be water, white water, stock, or a mixture of stock and white water. The headbox may discharge into a horizontal or vertical arrangement of wires. The wires may be guided by scraper blades behind the wires.
