Abstract

1285547 Hair-setting composition NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 4 Aug 1970 [5 Aug 1969] 37536/70 Heading C3U [Also in Divisions C4 and D1] A hair setting composition comprises an aqueous dispersion containing 1-6%, by weight, of a cationically substituted starch of amylose content more than 50% by weight, the starch being selected from primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary amine derivatives of starch containing 0À6-6% by wt. nitrogen; sulphonium derivatives having 1À2-12% by wt. sulphur; and phosphonium derivatives having 1À2-12% by wt. phosphorus. If, however, a non-cationic stabilizing group is included in the starch up to a maximum degree of substitution of 0À7, the amounts of N, P, and S may be reduced to 0À1, 0À2 and 0À2% respectively. A preferred starch derivative has the formula X-O-R-N-R 1 R 2 , where X is starch, R is alkylene or hydroxyalkylene and R 1 and R 2 are alkyl, aryl or alkaryl. The stabilizing group, if present, may be an ether or ester group. The hair setting composition is prepared by dispersing the starch derivative in cold water and heating to 90-100‹ C. for 20-30 minutes. The product may be then diluted to give a final starch content of 1-6%, by weight. The composition may be used in aerosol form, such that the composition contains 1-4% by weight starch (in aqueous dispersion), ethanol or iso. propanol, and an aerosol propellant, e.g. propane, butane, isobutane, trichloromonofluoromethane or dichlorotetrafluoroethylene.
