Abstract
1285530 Buoyant hose NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 27 July 1971 35286/71 Heading F2P A riser for extending substantially vertically in the ocean comprises a central tube 11 having a series of groups 25 of spokes 26 spaced therealong. A plurality of conduits 12 are helically wound about the central tube and pass between the sectors formed by the spokes, filler material being included between the conduits to reduce rubbing therebetween when the riser is flexed. A cover 17 is applied to hold the conduits 12, filler and central tube 11 together, the ends of the spokes 26 being long enough to project beyond said cover 17 so as to engage a groove in a metallic stiffening channel member 31 in buoy 32. A plurality of such buoys spaced along the riser assists in supporting the riser and distributes stresses in the central tube more evenly. As shown the buoys comprise semicircular segments which may be clamped around the spoke ends by chordwise bolts. The central tube 11 is preferably metallic and the spokes 26 may be welded thereto. Conduits 12 are also preferably of metal and the filling may be of synthetic fibres. The cover 12 may be of plastics sheet and stitched at 18, pieces of cover extending between the groups 25 of spokes.
