Abstract

1285081 Fuel cell batteries COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 21 July 1969 [3 Sept 1968] 36618/69 Addition to 1033004 Heading HlB A high temperature, solid electrolyte, fuel cell battery comprises a plurality of elements each comprising first and second electron conductive electrodes 4, 8 of opposite polarity and a cubicphase stabilized zirconia electrolyte 6 therebetween, the first electrode of each element being electrically insulated from the first electrode of other elements and alternating with a gas-impermeable, inert, refractory material 3 to form a separator 2 which supports electrolyte 6 and divides an enclosure in which the plurality of elements is positioned into two compartments which are fuel and oxidant gas chambers, electrolyte 6 being a thin layer on the separator in contact with first electrode 4 so that the separator-electrolyte assembly is impermeable to gas, an electron conductive material 7 being disposed between the electrolyte of each element and connecting the first electrode 4 of each element to the second electrode 8 of the adjacent element. The terminal elements have current collectors 9. As shown in Fig. 1 the separator 2 is flat. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) separator 2 is tubular with one reactant gas flowing through the tube and the other outside the tube. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,148,581.
