Abstract

1284966 Piezo-electric transducers MOTOROLA Inc 21 Aug 1970 [23 Sept 1969] 40319/70 Heading H4S A disc of polarized piezo-electric ceramic material is stressed into a dish-shaped configuration and confined in that configuration by a frame attached to the perimeter of the disc. Electrodes are formed on the opposite major surfaces of the disc. The disc may function as the diaphragm of a loudspeaker or transmitter since it can be sufficiently thin to provide a good impedance match to air. By proper selection of materials and dimensions a wide frequency response may be obtained. A disc 10 (Fig. 1) of barium titanate has electrodes 11, 12 applied by plating, sputtering or painting. The electroded disc 10 is placed in a groove 14, 15 in a ring 13 of tungsten, tungsten carbide, alumina ceramic or molybdenum. A weight is applied to the centre of the disc to dish the disc. A unidirectional electrical field between the electrodes 11, 12 effects permanent polarization. The perimeter of the disc 10 is cemented into the groove 14, 15 by epoxy cement. Upon application of a signal current, the disc 10 alternately expands and contracts within its elastic limit. The movement is translated into movement perpendicular to the plane of the ring 13. The ring 13 has torsional characteristics to follow the movements of the disc. To minimize tendency of the disc 10 to fracture, a thin film of polyethylene terephthalate may be cemented to one or both major surfaces. The electrodes may be over this film. One or both electrodes 11, 12 may form a resistive conductive coating. A paper cone may be attached to the centre of the diac 10 to enhance low frequency response. It is also suggested to use a ring (23), Fig. 6 (not shown), having its inner surface in the form of a circular knife edge against which the dished disc is wedged.
