Abstract

1284890 Porous solids derived from polymer/ monomer mixtures G WILL 4 Nov 1969 [5 Nov 1968 12 Nov 1968 2 June 1969] 54068/69 Headings C3C and C3P Compositions which are curable to form porous solid compositions comprise (a) 20 to 60 parts by weight of water; (b) (100 - a)/10 to (100 - a)/1À8 parts by weight of a water-insoluble pulverulent polymer which is slowly soluble or at least swellable in component (c) as hereinafter defined, the symbol "a" denoting the number of parts by weight of component (a); (c) 100 - (a+b) parts by weight of polymerizable liquid monomer having a terminal group and being emulsifiable with water, the symbols "a" and "b" denoting the number of parts by weight of components (a) and (b) respectively; (e) a non-ionic surface-active agent in an amount sufficient to give a stable water-inoil emulsion; (d) a water-soluble wetting agent in an amount insufficient to break the water-inoil emulsion; and (f) a polymerization catalyst and/or accelerator. In the examples component (b) was a homopolymer of methyl methacrylate or a copolymer thereof with butyl or ethyl acrylate, a styrene/unsaturated polyester mixture and/or polyvinyl chloride: (c) was methyl methacrylate, styrene, diallyl phthalate, butyl acrylate or an unsaturated polyester: (e) was polystyrene containing sulphonic acid or sulphonate groups or a polyol (a preferred surface active agent is the reaction product of ethylene oxide and a propylene oxide polymer); and (f) was benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide, or a tertiary amine. The compositions may be shaped in a mould and cured, and the water removed by air, vacuum, centrifuging or drying to produce a porous solid.
