Abstract
1284780 2-Methylene propane diol-1,3 and esters KURARAY CO Ltd 18 Nov 1969 [18 Nov 1968 30 Nov 1968 (2) 18 Feb 1969] 56501/69 Heading C2C A monocarboxylic acid diester of 2-methylene propanediol-1,3 is prepared by reacting isobutene with molecular oxygen or molecular oxygen-containing gas and a lower aliphatic C 2-5 monocarboxylic acid in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of at least a catalytic amount of palladium thereby forming a monocarboxylic acid monoester of 2-methyl allyl alcohol and subjecting this, with or without isolation, to treatment with molecular oxygen or a molecular oxygen-containing gas and a lower aliphatic C 1- monocarboxylic acid under the same reaction conditions as set out above. The 2-methylene propane diol-1,3 diesters may be hydrolysed, preferably in the presence of an acid catalyst to yield 2-methylene propane diol-1,3. In examples the acetate and propionate are prepared.
