Abstract

1284728 Inhibiting caries ASPRO NICHOLAS Ltd 10 Oct 1969 [23 Oct 1968] 50322/68 Heading A2B [Also in Division A5] Pharmacologically acceptable compositions for application to teeth containing an amount effective to inhibit dental caries of a carbohydrate inhibitor, i.e. a carbohydrate which inhibits or prevents the biosynthesis of dextran from sucrose, and/or a substance capable of producing such an inhibitor in situ on teeth and dextranase, are added to food-stuffs confectionary products, and ice-cream. The carbohydrate inhibitor may be fructose or an oligo- or poly-saccharide contaning a glucopyranose unit as non-reducing end group or a glucopyranose unit in which the C 2 , C 3 , C 4 and C 6 hydroxyls are unsubstituted, optionally reduced at the C 1 position of the reducing end to the corresponding alcohols or oxidised to the corresponding -onic acids e.g. maltose, maltotriose, isomaltose, α-methylglucoside, dextrans having a molecular weight of less than 20000 and mixtures of saccharides produced by α-amylose digestion or acid hydrolysis of starch, amylose or amylopectin. The substance capable of forming a carbohydrate inhibitor may be an amylase enzyme such as pullalanase, α-amylase or /3-amylase or mixtures thereof.
