Abstract

1283587 Separating gas mixtures MOBIL OIL CORP 4 Aug 1969 38949/69 Heading B1L Gas mixtures are separated into lighter and heavier fractions by causing the gas stream to emerge into duct 14 from nozzle 12 at supersonic velocity, there being positioned in the path of the supersonic stream hollow probes 16 facing upstream at a distance from nozzle 12 such that shock waves can form upstream of the probes 16, as a result of which the heavier fraction can be withdrawn through probes 16 and ducts 18. The probes may be either cylindrical as shown or slots of straight or spiral configuration (see Figs. 4, 5, not shown). The gas pressure and probe dimensions should be such as to provide a Knudsen number of 0.02-10. In examples, (1) N 2 was enriched 44% from a supply mixture of 80% H 2 and 20% H 2 ; (2) N 2 was enriched 30% from a supply of 50% N 2 and 50% H 2 ; (3) a mixture of 54% N 2 and 46% Ar was obtained from a supply of 58% N 2 ; (4) a mixture of 60% H 2 and 40% N 2 was obtained from a supply of 80% H 2 and 20% N 2 ; (5) and (6) mixtures containing 29%, 28%, 31% and 38-39% Ar were obtained under different conditions from a supply of 10% Ar and 90% Hc.
