Abstract
1283429 Surgical retractors W K GAUTHIER 29 Oct 1970 [31 Oct 1969 19 Oct 1970] 51528/70 Heading A5R A surgical retractor apparatus comprises a frame of four members 10, 12, 14 and 16 interconnected by manual clamping devices that lock the members in preselected positions, and at least one support arm 140 for a retractor blade connected to the frame. Several embodiments of clamping devices are disclosed but preferably each fits into a channel provided in the frame member and comprises two opposed serrated helical cams 60, 62 mounted on a post 44. One of the cams 62 may be provided with a handle to facilitate the locking of the device. The support arm 140 has a removable grip 144 at one end and a connector 150 for retractor blades 160 slotted onto the opposite end. Several designs of blade are disclosed but generally they are arcuate in shape and may be telescopically mounted having cooperating detents (194) for holding them at various depths in the incision. The apparatus is usually made of aluminium, stainless steel or some plastics material. Preferably the contacting parts are coated with P.T.F.E.
