1283095 Zinc electro-deposition SCHERING A G 11 Aug 1969 [10 Aug 1968] 39984/69 Heading C7B An acidic zinc electrolyte contains as glossing agents N-polyvinylpyrrolidone-2 and a ketone of the general formula in which R 1 and R 2 each represent (a) an aryl group, (b) an aryl-aliphatic group, (c) a 5- or 6- membered heterocylic group containing a nitrogen and/or an oxygen hetero atom, (d) a heterocyclic-aliphatic group, (e) a phenylcarbonyl-aliphatic hydrocarbon group, or in which R 1 has one of the meanings (a) to (e) and R 2 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an alkoxycarbonylalkyl or cyanoalkyl group, e.g. the ketone may be acetophenone, ethynyl phenyl ketone, propionphenone, benzalacetone, benzoylacetone, acetylpyridine, dihydroxybenzophenone, benzoylpyridine, benzoylacetic acid, ethyl ester or 1-(2-furyl)-1'- buten-3-one. Other conventional glossing agents such as thiadiazole derivatives and compounds of high molecular weight, and wetting agents may also be present, e.g. nonylphenol-ethylene oxide, sodium ethylhexyl sulphate, fatty alcohol polyglycol ether or the sodium salt of dodecylphenolpolyglycol ether sulphate. The acid zinc electrolyte may comprise zinc sulphate, zinc chloride, zinc acetate, zinc fluoborate and/or zinc sulphamate together with a salt such as ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium sulphate, sodium acetate or aluminium sulphate; and may contain boric acid. The bath may be agitated by air injection.
