Abstract

1282988 Coated products FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 29 Sept 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 46178/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates may be coated with a paint binder or paint containing a resin prepared by (1) reaction of a siloxane having at least two hydroxy and/or alkoxy groups per molecule with about one mole of a C 2-21 diol per hydroxy or alkoxy group, (2) reaction of the product with about one mole of a C 4-36 dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof per mole of diol used, and (3) reaction of this product with glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate or a C 5-12 monohydroxy acrylate or methacrylate. A paint binder contains the resin in solution in a vinyl monomer. Suitable diols, dicarboxylic acids, monohydroxy acrylates and vinyl monomers are listed. In Examples a methoxysiloxane of 700-800 or a hydroxycyclic siloxane of MW 1600 is heated with a diol: neopentyl glycol, polyethylene or polypropylene glycol, 1:3-butylene glycol or hexamethylene glycol, in the presence of tetra-isopropyl titanate; then with a dicarboxylic acid: maleic, tetrahydrophthalic or succinic anhydride or adipic, azelaic or a C 36 dimer acid; then with an acrylate: glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate or 2-hydroxy-ethyl, -propyl, -butyl, or -octyl acrylate or methacrylate, in the presence of hydroquinone and tetraethylammonium chloride. The products are mixed in ratios between 9:1 and 1:9 by weight with methyl methacrylate alone or with ethyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or styrene, butyl methacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene and hydroxyethyl methacrylate, to give binder solutions, to which TiO 2 in one case is added, which are applied to glass, steel, wood, polypropylene or a cotton fabric.
