Abstract

1282751 Supply circuits for road vehicles; protective arrangements JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 18 Dec 1969 [3 Jan 1969] 540/69 Headings H2H and H2K A road vehicle supply system includes a current-sensitive device which operates to complete an auxiliary circuit should current through the device become excessive, for example, due to a short-circuit. In the system shown, a battery 19 is connected to a terminal 13 of a thermally operable circuit breaker 11. In normal operation, a movable contact 16 connects terminal 13 with a terminal 12 so as to supply an ignition switch 26 and a lighting switch 32. The ignition switch 26 is connected to an ignition coil terminal 31, and to other loads by way of a terminal 28. If now any part of the circuit between the terminal 13 and earth short-circuits, the circuit breaker 11 will operate to move the contact 16 out of contact with terminal 12 and into a position where it connects terminals 14 and 15 with terminal 13. A warning lamp 17 is now energized, and the ignition coil and dipped headlamps 38, 39 are supplied with current for a short time until the contact 16 returns to its normal position, allowing time to stop the vehicle. Fuses 29, 36 and 37 prevent current flowing to the fault through the auxiliary circuit, and may be replaced by diodes. In modifications the circuit breaker may be operated by a relay coil, and may be arranged to latch in its fault position.
