1282553 Burners J W MIDDLEMAS and E C JOPE 25 July 1969 [18 July 1968] 34292/68 Heading F4T An apparatus for firing a furnace comprises a nozzle which directs a jet of fuel oil onto a hot refractory surface of a chamber formed in the wall 1 of a shaft kiln, thereby vaporizing the fuel oil, and one or more primary air inlets situated close to the fuel oil nozzle for mixing air or oxygen with the fule oil vapour so that after ignition a portion of the vapour is burnt, the resulting mixture of vapour and carbon particles being formed into a stream into which are injected combustible gases from tubes 8 and 9 so that ignition occurs at the mouth of the chamber. The combustible gases may be blast furnace gases, coke oven gases, acetylenic gases from calcium carbide furnaces and hydrocarbon gases such as natural gas and volatilizedlightoils. The point of impact of the jet of fuel oil on the chamber wall may be continuously varied by having a movable nozzle.
