Abstract

1282332 Gloss sensing unit FAIRCHILD CAMERA & INSTRUMENT CORP 11 March 1970 [1 April 1969] 11690/70 Heading G1A A gloss sensing unit, Fig.1, is rendered independent of environmental contamination by using three separate radiation paths 10, 20, 30 formed by a common infrared source 21 together with three collimating lenses 11, 21, 31 and three sensing units 12, 22, 32, each including a focusing lens and a photo-diode, path 30 including a reflection by a gloss reference standard 2 in an enclosed chamber, and path 20 providing information for a measure of environmental contamination. Radiation in path 10 is directed via window 13 on to the moving surface 4 of the material (e.g. paper) whose gloss is being measured and thence via window 14 to sensing unit 12. Radiation paths 10 and 20 are exposed to the environment of the material 4 and so dust will eventually coat windows 13, 23, 14, 24. The signals from sensing units 22, 32, are fed into a differential amplifier A 1 , Fig. 5, and the signals from sensing unit 12 and from a tuning potentiometer are fed into a different amplifier A 2 ; the outputs of each amplifier being fed to a further differential amplifier A 3 . Initially the signal from unit 22 is adjusted by means of iris 25 till it equals the signal from unit 32, and initially potentiometer R22 is adjusted until it provides a signal equal to the signal from unit 12 (when a test sample is used in place of material 4). Variable resistor R25 is then adjusted until the output of A 3 is zero. When the gloss sensing unit is applied to the moving material 4 only signals proportional to variations of the gloss are processed; any signal variations due to environmental contaminants from units 22 and 12 cancel out one another at the differential amplifier A 3 stage.
