1282122 Endless conveyers HIGH VOLTAGE ENG CORP 13 Oct 1969 50228/69 Heading B8A [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for irradiating materials with electrons, e.g. for sterilization or for crosslinking plastics materials, is provided with shielding sufficient to attenuate any X-rays generated to a level below 2À5 millirads per hour, and with interlock means whereby the electron beam is interrupted if the shielding is removed. In treating packages 124, Fig. 12, a circular turret 120 with paddle arms 123 receives the packages from a conveyer 125, and after they have been irradiated through electron window 30 deposits them on the output conveyers 126. In an arrangement for treating 4<SP>1</SP> Î 8<SP>1</SP> sheets of plywood, Fig. 13, # pair of continuous roller chains 167 and 168 are joined by a plurality of slats 169, say one every two feet, and the end slats are preferably provided with stops 170. Every eight feet then is provided a pair of 2 inch lead filled steel rollers 172 and 173 adapted to intercept radiation travelling parallel to the conveyers. The rollers pass under a screening lip 163 with minimum clearance (1/16 inch) and then the leading roller 173 descends a ramp 183 whilst the trailing roller 172 ascends a track 184 on each side so that it passes under the cover plates 164, 165 with minimum clearance.
